About.
I've spent the last year as acting CTO of a global executive search firm, building the platform its recruiters use every day — and five years before that across regulated crypto, fund infrastructure and public broadcasting. I came to software from a decade as a working drummer and a stint in the naval reserve, which taught me to stay calm in the face of adversity. I build systems that hold up when nobody is watching them, and I don't ship the parts I'd have to apologise for later.
What I do now
I'm independent. Two things: I go inside a team and work on their system, or I build something from scratch and hand it back. Same person either way, and I don't sub-contract to a team you never meet.
Why I work the way I do
A bug of mine once sent hundreds of messages to a client. He is a friend.
The messages weren't wrong — they were sent by a machine to a person at a moment that needed a person, and that is the whole problem with how most AI gets deployed.
So every system I build has a line in it: above a confidence level it acts, below it it asks, and the parts where trust is built, kept or lost are never automated. Most advice in this field pushes businesses past that line. Knowing where it is, is the job.
And outside work
Drummer by training. Nine years in the naval reserve. Toronto to Mexico City. I work remotely, on US and EU hours.
